Setup and fixes

How to clear your hard drive of junk files.

Running out of storage makes updates, downloads, backups, and apps harder to manage. This checklist starts with low-risk cleanup targets before touching personal files or system folders.

Do this first

Check what is using space before deleting anything. Storage tools can show whether the problem is downloads, videos, photos, apps, system data, cloud sync, or backups.

Low-risk cleanup order

  1. Empty trash or recycle bin. Confirm nothing important is waiting there.
  2. Review Downloads. Remove old installers, duplicate downloads, zip files, and exports.
  3. Use built-in cleanup tools. On Windows, use Storage settings or Disk Cleanup. On macOS, use Storage Management.
  4. Remove unused apps. Uninstall apps through the normal settings flow, not by deleting random folders.
  5. Archive large personal files. Move old photos, videos, and project folders only after backup is verified.

Do not manually delete

  • Windows, System32, Program Files, Library, System, or hidden OS folders.
  • Backups unless you have confirmed a newer usable backup exists.
  • Files with names you do not recognize inside app or system folders.
  • Cloud sync placeholders unless you understand whether they are local-only or cloud-backed.

What to clear

Common junk-file targets ranked by risk.

Target Typical value Risk level How to handle it
Recycle bin or trash Often large after file cleanup. Low, after review Open it first, restore anything important, then empty it.
Downloads folder Old installers, duplicate files, exported PDFs, zip files. Low to medium Sort by size and date. Move keepers before deleting.
Browser and app caches Temporary data that apps can usually rebuild. Low through settings Clear through the browser or app settings, not by deleting hidden folders.
Videos and photo exports High space savings. Medium Back up first. Keep originals separate from exports.
Duplicate files Can save space, but mistakes are common. Medium to high Compare file size, date, location, and contents before deleting.

Windows notes

  • Open Settings > System > Storage to see categories.
  • Use Temporary files and review every checked item.
  • Use Apps > Installed apps to remove programs.
  • Do not delete system folders to force space savings.

Mac notes

  • Open System Settings > General > Storage.
  • Review Applications, Documents, iCloud Drive, and Trash.
  • Use app uninstall instructions when an app includes its own remover.
  • Be careful with Library folders unless you know what created the files.

Questions

Storage cleanup questions people search.

What files are safe to delete to free up disk space?

Usually safe targets include reviewed trash, old installers, duplicate downloads, temporary exports, and app caches cleared through built-in settings. Avoid system folders and unknown files.

How do I free up space on Windows?

Use Windows Storage settings, Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup first. Review Downloads and uninstall unused apps before deleting personal files.

How do I free up storage space on Mac?

Use macOS Storage settings, review Applications and Documents, empty Trash, clear Mail junk when relevant, and move large files only after confirming they are backed up.

Why did deleting files not free up disk space?

Deleted files may still be in Trash or Recycle Bin, cloud sync may not have updated, snapshots or backups may retain data, or another cache may have grown at the same time.
